Day one

Session – I  Mainstreaming Mitigation Hierarchy in Impact Assessment

  • EIA framework and conceptual origins of mitigation

  • Mitigation: Opportunities, synergies, timelines and responsibilities

  • Mitigation Hierarchy framework: Key steps and practice principles

  • Mainstreaming Mitigation Hierarchy in key sectors : Sharing success stories from around the world and gains for conservation

Session – II  Offsets in Mitigation Hierarchy

  • Biodiversity Offsets: Design, legislations, policies and principles

  • Biodiversity Offsets: Case examples highlighting conservation outcomes

  • Group exercise for evaluating an offset scheme for a win-win outcome for conservation and development

Day two

Session – III  Impact assessment tools for mitigation of impacts at a regional scale

  • Cumulative impact assessment for assessing the ‘big picture’ impacts of multiple projects and plans for mitigation of landscape level impacts

Session – IV  Planning Proactive mitigation as less expensive solution

  • The economics of targeted mitigation in different sectors

  • Strategic Environmental Assessment: A proactive approach to avoid reactive mitigation

  • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for reducing environmental burden

Session – V  Learning by doing: Practical and interactive exercises planned for participatory learning on both days

  • Three sessions are planned for involving the participants

  • Video film for reviewing the potential of impacts of an energy project and planning mitigation

  • Engaging participants in exercises to evaluate mitigation options, biodiversity offsets and application of LCA
