Course feedback based on the comments of the participants  (participants' names suppressed)

Worthwhile things learned during the course

  • Participation or role play is a very effective way to learn. Also, biodiversity mitigation has offsets as the last alternative.

  • Learned a great deal about offsets, their application and importance, some methodology.

  • Had opportunity to learn better the new tools of impact assessment.

  • Biodiversity conservation is a serious issue that need to be looked at critically in conducting EIA’s for development projects.

  • Learned that it is of global concern for biodiversity, learned there is a need to push this consciousness done through all levels of society and organisation.

Things that helped the participants work effectively

  • Good interaction between facilitators and participants, clear and well presented topics.

  • Visual presentation of salient issues, coordinated presentation by the instructors, cooperation and interactions of the participants.

  • Role-play exercise, discussion, very clear talks and explanation.

  • Teachers were very knowledgeable and quite patient with everyone.

  • Good presentation of instructors, good and effective methodology that used discussions and argumentation.

  • The various practical examples that were incorporated like various presentations.

  • Excellent instructors with hands on experience and leads of real examples, instructors facilitated open discussion and indeed stimulated active thought.

Things that kept the participants from being more effective

  • Importance of the course to my career, well arranged instructors.

  • Lock of time constraint is a very large barrier, language limitations.

  • If the project that introduce like offsets will be more realistic rather than theoretical, time consuming.

  • Some of the presentations were very fast, few were a bit technical.

  • Not having heard of biodiversity offsets earlier.

  • A lot of material for just two days.

General comments and suggestions

  • Detailed discussion on SEA in biodiversity assessment.

  • Would like to see offsets explored more comprehensively, will more time for discussion.

  • Need more information about benchmarks, biodiversity offsets.

  • IAIA could organise other training programmes aside the annual conference.

  • More on biodiversity offsets with results, bioengineering, if possible?

  • It is possible to name more comprehensive technical course on biodiversity offsets.
