Thrust Area : Water resource management

Project Area : Godhan, Gargal & Kandi villages of Jammu District, J&K.

Under this project, three villages, namely Gargal, Kandi and Godhan of rainfed area of Jammu district have been selected for implementation of different soil and water conservation methods. The proposed interventions are, construction of poly tanks for water harvesting including water recharging tank, small recharging pit, roof water harvesting, gravity feed drip irrigation system, trenching, contour bunding, gabion structures, small check dam.

 Objectives: 

  • Creation of water harvesting and recharging structures.
  • Efficient utilization of harvested water for improving livelihood.

Progress:

  • Survey of the selected villages completed
  • Interaction with farmers of selected villages regarding project activities
  • Survey of interested farmers who are ready for construction of soil and water conservation structures
  • Identification of potential sites/beneficiaries
  • Designed soil and water conservation structures
  • Completed construction of 5 percolation tanks, 10 recharging pits
  • Drip irrigation kits have been purchased, will be installed on site after the completion of water harvesting structures
  • Farmers have shown keen interest in adopting new technologies, and have come forward to adopt soil and water conservation measures.
  • Total 20 number of soil and water conservation structures have been constructed in the selected villages.
  • In village Gargal, total 05 numbers of structures have been constructed. Out of this, 01 number of polytank, 02 numbers of percolation tanks and 02 number of recharging pits, while in village Godhan, total 07 structures have been constructed-80 tool kits comprising of tubular maize sheller, serrated sickle, line marker & gudnoo were distributed among the beneficiaries for improving productivity.
  • 8.0 kg Mushroom (Dhingri) spawn were distributed among the beneficiaries.
  • 3.5 ha area has been brought under improved maize cultivation (Kanchan 517 Gold)  and 4.00 ha area under improved wheat cultivation (WH-1080)
  • 0.75 ha area has been brought under improved vegetable cultivation (okra, cucumber, bottle gourd and bitter gourd)
