Thrust Area : Sustainable Agriculture and Biofarming

Project Area : Khara, Madana, Sangarh and Badakhetra Villages of Samba district and Chak Shian and Chowadhi village of Jammu district.

Objectives :

  • To reduce inter calving period of cows and buffaloes.

  • Training on backyard poultry and establishment of backyard poultry units.

  • Empowerment of farmers by imparting skill for preparation of value added milk and meat products.

The focus of the project is involvement of women in large numbers. Overall 330 individuals have been trained under this project out of which 85% are women. Collection of ground data of milk production of the dairy animals in the target area is completed. Along with this, 150 backyard poultry units have been established. Distribution of booklets and pamphlets related to dairy and poultry farming among the participants has been carried out.
At the end of the project a technology package in dairy farming of the local area will be made available to these farmers. On completion of training programmes, poultry birds will be distributed to the beneficiaries. Egg production data will be recorded at several intervals. Health facilities in all the aspects will be continued.

Progress:

  • Identification of beneficiaries on the basis of socio-economic status.
  • Collection of ground data on milk production status of the dairy animals in the target areas.
  • Fecal and ecto-parasitic samples of the animals have been collected.
  • Anoestrus cases detected and treated.
  • Training for modern dairy practices, housing, management imparted.
  • Mineral mixture given to animals.
  • Broiler farming training conducted; farm and backyard poultry units (about 83) established and adopted in target areas.
  • Poultry birds distributed to the beneficiaries on completion of training programs.
  • Zero-day body weight of the chicks have been recorded; average weight gain at different intervals have been recorded after deworming.
  • About 60 persons were trained and made aware of infertility in animals.
  • 5 trainings on livestock management conducted.
  • 150 units of rearing sustainable backyard poultry were set up.
  • 150 people were made aware of deworming in animals.
  • Hormonal treatment of the animals for higher reproduction rates was done.
  • Deworming of dairy animals after fecal examination was done along with incorporation of mineral mixture in diet to reduce the number of anoestrus cases, and to enhance milk production.
  • 65% households from lower socio-economic strata involved in the project.
  • 16% men and 84% women of lower socio-economic strata involved in the project.
