  • Two-days Sensitisation Workshop on ‘Urban Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services’ through virtual mode on 22-23 February, 2021

    Wildlife Institute of India with support from Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India had organized two-days sensitisation workshop on ‘Urban Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services’ through virtual mode on 22-23rd February, 2021. The objective of the workshop to enrich the understanding on urban biodiversity and ecosystems services to the personnel of other than Forest services. Government Officials, NGOs, Town Planners, Academicians of Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh States were participated, interacted and discussed about the issues and challenges on urban biodiversity conservation, ecosystem services, management and financing. Dr. Dhananjai Mohan, Director WII delivered the opening remarks and highlighted the importance of urban biodiversity conservation. Dr. Sanjay Sondhi (Founder Titli Trust), Dr. Monalisa Sen, (Programme Coordinator ICLEI), Dr. Lokesh Ohri, (Independent Director, Dehradun Smart City Limited), Dr. Raman Kumar (Director, Nature Science Initiative), Dr. K Sivakumar (Scientist, WII) and Dr. Gautam Talukdar (Scientist, WII) gave their valuable inputs and discuss on various aspects like nature-based solutions to address climate change & biodiversity conservation, City Biodiversity Index, Citizen Science Initiative for ecological monitoring, impacts of urban expansion on biodiversity & ecosystem services, role of administration & local bodies in conservation of urban biodiversity etc. The workshop was ended with the vote of thanks to all the dignitaries.

  • Signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Wildlife Institute of India and Centre for Public Policy and Good Governance (CPPGG), Government of Uttarakhand

    Dr. Dhananjai Mohan, Director, Wildlife Institute of India has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dr. Manoj Kumar Pant, Additional CEO, Centre for Public Policy and Good Governance (CPPGG), Department of Planning, Government of Uttarakhand on 3rd February, 2021 for three years, to establish mutually beneficial collaborations with the objective to improve the policy making, implementation, monitoring and evaluation for the Government of Uttarakhand. Dr. Nasim Ahmad Ansari, Project Scientist has been nominated as Nodal Officer from WII and Shri Ranjan Borah, Disaster Management Specialist has been nominated as Nodal Officer from CPPGG to coordinate the projects of mutual interests and collaboration. The collaboration will help in implementation of Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to conduct several policy studies such as assessment of natural accounting, valuation of ecosystem services, mainstreaming biodiversity, climate change and disaster risk reduction, identification of natural and cultural heritage sites in the State of Uttarakhand.

  • Release of Book to commemorate World Wetlands Day 2021

    On the occasion of, World Wetlands Day, a book “Framework for Ecological Monitoring of Ramsar Sites and other Wetlands in India”, was released virtually by Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Hon’ble Minister of Jal Shakti. The dignitaries present on the occasion were Shri Ratan Lal Kataria, Hon’ble Minister of State for Jal Shakti and Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India, Shri Pankaj Kumar, Secretary, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Shri Rajiv Ranjan Mishra, Director General, National Mission for Clean Ganga. Dr. Dhananjai Mohan, Director, Wildlife Institute of India, Dr. Ruchi Badola, Scientist G, Wildlife Institute of India, Dr. S.A. Hussain, and NMCG-WII project team joined virtually for release of the book.

     

    This book is an output of the Wildlife Institute of India’s and National Mission for Clean Ganga’s biodiversity conservation and Ganga rejuvenation initiative. This document will aid in comprehensive monitoring of the wetlands through easy techniques, and can be readily used by a large number of stakeholders. It provides a robust framework that addresses ecosystem level processes and functions to evaluate and prioritize wetlands for focused conservation action. The information generated using this framework would provide scientific baseline regarding the ecological conditions of wetlands, identification of specific cause of degradation and, will aid in prioritizing and planning focused conservation actions and management decisions. The monitoring techniques provided in this document are in sync with the Ramsar guidelines and can be used to assess the status of wetland in India. The techniques proposed in this book are robust, replicable and strengthen the existing wetland monitoring framework to allow rapid identification of changes in wetlands for timely implementation of conservation and management actions. This document is also a reflection of our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, the Ramsar Convention and India’s National Water Policy, which emphasizes on restoration of the wetlands for water security. This document also aligns with the Ministry of Jal Shakti’s water conservation initiative ‘Jal Shakti Abhiyan’, which directs participation of stakeholder in water management with scientific inputs from local research and academic institutions.

  • Online Inception cum Planning Workshop for Management Effectiveness Evaluation (MEE) of 210 National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries in India, 2020-21 on 11th January 2021

    Wildlife Institute of India in collaboration with Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India had organized an ‘Inception cum Planning Workshop for Management Effectiveness Evaluation (MEE) of 210 National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries in India, 2020-21’ through online mode on 11th January 2021. The objective of the meeting was to initiate the exercise of MEE of 210 PAs during 2020-21. The introductory remarks given by Dr. Dhananjai Mohan, Director WII and opening remarks made by Shri Soumitra Dasgupta ADGF (Wildlife), MoEFCC. During the workshop, Hon’ble MEF has released the MEE Report of 146 PAs evaluated during 2018-19; launched the MEE Framework for Coastal and Marine PAs; and announced the award system from present MEE cycle as incentive to PA managers. Shri Javadekar, Hon’ble MEF expressed his happiness, that India have the 70% of the global tiger population, 70% of Asiatic lions and more than 60% of leopard’s population and their growing numbers shows the well-being of the whole ecosystem. The meeting was attended by Chairpersons, Members of 20 Independent Regional Expert Committees, WII-MEE Faculty representatives and other dignitaries. In the meeting, deliberations on overview of MEE process, operational modalities to undertake MEE exercise of 210 PAs during 2020-21 and demonstration of web-based application system to submit the online MEE data, were made. At the end, it was decided that WII will organize regional online meetings with CWLWs to facilitate the MEE exercise. The meeting was ended with the vote of thanks to all the dignitaries.
