The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) is a premier national autonomous Institute of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoE&F), Government of India in the field of teaching, training and research. The WII wishes to engage 11 research personnel viz., 01-Research Associate, 02-Project Biologists, 01-Project Sociologist, 01-Senior Research Fellow/Junior Research Fellow and 06-Junior Research Fellows (Indian national only) through a walk-in-interview on Friday, 6th December 2013. The details of the available positions along with essential and desirable qualifications, terms and conditions and how to apply are given below:

Project Title, details of position and duration

Execution of Implementation Plan - Kailash Sacred Landscape Conservation and Development Initiative (KSLCDI).

 (02 – Project  Biologists and 01 – Project Sociologist )

 

Duration: Up to 31.12.2013 (likely to be extended)

Essential Qualification

Masters’ Degree in Zoology/Botany/Life Science/Wildlife Science/Forestry/Environ-mental Science/Social Sciences relevant to studies in human dimensions aspect of wildlife conservation with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

Given below are the desirable qualification(s) for two Project Biologists (one each in fish and insect) and One Project Sociologist (remote sensing and human dimensions)

  • Candidates with strong physical and mental abilities. Having a keen desire to carryout arduous field work in the remote and rugged high altitudes of Uttarakhand Himalaya under extreme cold or rainy conditions with minimal logistic support. Demonstrate ability to work in the field under harsh conditions.
  • Demonstrate a passion for wildlife research and conservation.
  • Experience in basic wildlife field techniques (study design, sign surveys, line transects, sampling, camera trapping, etc.) and conversant with data analysis, ecological and statistical software.
  • Have relevant research experience and published research papers to his/ her credit.
  • Experience of participation in scientific conferences/workshops/meetings.
  • Field research experience relevant to fish/insects/remote sensing/wildlife science/ high altitude ecology/landscape approach to conservation/ social sciences relevant to human dimension of wildlife conservation.
  • Prior experience of working with communities/Park people interface and related aspects.

Description of Work
  • He/she will be responsible to carry out specific tasks/activities relevant to Project Components assigned to him/her and submit periodic reports on such tasks.
  • Field data collection, data analysis, synthesis, and report writing.
  • Assist Task Supervisors/ Project Coordinator/ Nodal officer in conduct of meetings, field training, workshops and conferences as envisaged in the project. 
  • Prepare scientific papers, reports and presentations and dissemination material / project related outreach activities.
  • Any other assignment by Project Authorities.

Project Title, details of position and duration

Monitoring land use by wildlife, livestock and humans in Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve.

(01 – Junior Research Fellow)

Duration: Up to May 2014 (likely to be extended)

Essential Qualification

Masters’ Degree in Wildlife Biology/Zoology/Forestry/Botany with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

Field research experience in the field of wildlife biology/sociology or park-people interface aspects/GIS. Ability to speak and understand Nepali language would be of advantage.

Only candidates with strong physical and mental abilities and a keen desire to carryout arduous field work in the remote and rugged high altitudes of the Sikkim Himalaya under extreme cold or rainy conditions with minimal logistic support may apply.

Description of Work

This project aims to develop a spatial database on the land use patterns by wildlife, livestock and humans in Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve and develop a programme for monitoring the use of wildlife, livestock and humans in Khangchendzonga Biosphere Reserve. This project involves extensive and field work in the remote, rugged, high altitude regions of Sikkim Himalayan region and also extensive lab work related to dietary analysis, molecular genetic studies, and computer based modeling analysis.

Status and Habitat assessment of Bengal Florican Houbaropsis bengalensis in the grasslands of Uttar Pradesh.

(01 – Junior Research Fellow)

Duration: Up to July 2014

Essential Qualification

Masters’ Degree in Life Science/Wildlife Science/Environmental Science/Ecology/ Forestry/Zoology with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

Research experiences in wildlife population assessment and birds ecology. Certificate/Diploma in Remote Sensing.

Description of Work

The study aims to assess the population status and habitat use of Bengal florican in the State of Uttar Pradesh. The JRF will conduct extensive field works in and around the Dudwa Tiger Reserve, analyse data and publish research findings.

Project Title, details of position and duration

A study on the ecology and migration pattern of the Lesser Florican Sypheotides  indica in  Western  India  using  satellite  tracking techniques.

(01 – Junior Research Fellow)

Duration: Up to 03.02.2016

Masters’ Degree in Life Science/Wildlife Science/Environmental Science/Ecology/ Forestry/Zoology/Botany with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

Research experiences in wildlife population assessment and birds ecology.

Description of Work

The study aims to observe the migration pattern, population status and habitat use of Lesser florican in India. The JRF will conduct extensive field work, analyse data and publish of research findings.

Project Title, details of position and duration

Long term monitoring of tigers, co-predators & prey species in Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve and adjoining landscapes, Maharashtra, India.

(01 – Senior Research Fellow / Junior Research Fellow )

Duration: Up to 03.04.2018

Essential Qualification

Senior Research Fellow: Masters’ Degree in Wildlife Science/Statistics/Life Science/Forestry/ Environmental Science with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University with a minimum of two years research experience after Masters’ Degree.

 

Junior Research Fellow: Masters’ Degree in Wildlife Science/Statistics/Life Science Forestry/ Environmental Science with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification
  • Demonstrate a liking and passion for wildlife research and conservation.
  • Experience in basic wildlife field techniques (study design, sign surveys, line transects, vegetation sampling, camera trapping, occupancy etc.).
  • Conversant with data analysis, ecological & statistical software (abundance estimation, mark-recapture, DISTANCE, MARK, PRESENCE).
  • Demonstrate ability to work in the field under harsh conditions.
  • Well versed with statistical analysis.

Description of Work

Studying tigers and co-predators through radio telemetry, tigers and co-predators population estimation and monitoring, prey population estimation and monitoring, habitat use estimation, predation and human-animal conflict evaluation. The researchers are required to conduct field work to collect relevant data to address the varied aspects of the study.

Tracking the Great Indian Bustard (Ardeotis nigriceps) and mapping its potential habitat across the Deccan Landscape, Maharashtra India.

(01 – Junior Research Fellow)

Duration: Two Years (likely to be extended)

Description of Work

The proposed project expects to generate scientific knowledge on the movements of the Great Indian Bustard (GIB), its spatial use of the landscape and the social issues that threaten its survival. This is critical for the long-term conservation and management of this highly threatened species occurring within human dominated landscapes. This broad scale approach will be complemented by a detailed investigation of the bustard habitats at selected sites in the Deccan landscape in relation to key threatening processes, including grazing impacts and habitat alteration. It is hoped that this study will mark the beginning of an integrated management program for the GIB in association with the State Forest Departments and the local communities.

Masters’ Degree in Wildlife Science/Life Science/Forestry/Environmental Science with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification
  • Field research experience in the Himalayan region; experience in the field of wildlife survey; Use of GIS and data analysis software.
  • Candidates with strong physical and mental abilities and a keen desire to carryout arduous field work in the remote and rugged high altitudes of the Trans Himalaya under extreme cold or rainy conditions with minimal logistic support may apply.

Description of Work

The project aims to collect ecological data on Himalayan Wolf across the Indian Trans Himalayan region. This project involves extensive field work in the remote, rugged, high altitude regions of J&K, Himachal, Uttarakhand and Sikkim.

Project Title, details of position and duration

Ecology of the endangered Asiatic lions using satellite and GPS telemetry.

(01 – Research Associate)

Duration: Three Years

Essential Qualification

Ph.D. Degree in Wildlife Science/Zoology/Forestry/Veterinary Science from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification
  • Candidate should possess adequate experience in basic wildlife techniques and conversant with analytical approaches of ecological data. Preference will be given to candidates with field research experience on large carnivores.
  • Knowledge on population ecology, habitat use and human-carnivore conflict with the use of bio-telemetry is preferred.
  • The candidate should have good writing skills with published research on large carnivores in peer reviewed journals.
  • Knowledge and research in the Gir landscape with local language skills are desirable.

Description of Work

Work involves population monitoring of lions, ungulates, radio-telemetry based field work with research/behavioural observations on lions and studying aspects of human-lion conflict. Supervision of field work, field station and writing papers.

Project Title, details of position and duration

A study of resource selection by Black Kites.

(01 – Junior Research Fellow)

Duration: One Year

Essential Qualification

Masters’ Degree in Wildlife Science/Zoology/Botany/Life Science/Forestry/Veterinary Science with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.

Desirable Qualification

Candidate must possess adequate experience and interest in field oriented wildlife research, quantitative and analytical skills, good writing skills, having work experience on raptors, capture and monitoring.

Description of Work

Work involves population monitoring of Black Kites, radio-telemetry based field work with on foot research/behavioural observations.

       

GENERALTERMS & CONDITIONS

  1. Candidate(s) possessing Master’s Degree along with final year mark-sheet will only be eligible to appear for the walk-in-interview. Candidates appearing in the final year of Masters’ Degree Program will not be eligible to apply for the advertised positions.
  2. For the advertised position of Research Associate, candidate with a Ph.D. Degree will only be eligible to appear for the walk-in-interview.
  3. A candidate may be allowed to submit duly filled-in application form(s) for a maximum of two advertised positions subject to his/her fulfilling the essential qualifications for the advertised positions. Applications without enclosures and/or incomplete in any respect shall be rejected.  
  4. Age of the candidate shall not be more than 28 years for JRF/Project Biologist/Project Sociologist and 32 years for Senior Research Fellow as on Monday, 2nd December 2013. Upper age limit for SRF/JRF/Project Biologist/Project Sociologist may be relaxed up to 5 years in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Women and physically handicapped categories.
  5. Candidate for the position of Research Associate (RA) should be below 40 years of age as on Monday, 2nd December 2013 and the upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years for candidates belonging to SC/ST categories.
  6. The fellowship amount for the selected Research Associate (RA-I) will be ` 22,000/- consolidated per month.
  7. Selected candidate(s) for the advertised position of Project Biologist/Sociologist will be paid a consolidated emolument of Rs. 12,000/- per month as fellowship.
  8. The fellowship amount for the selected Senior Research Fellow is Rs. 14,000/- consolidated per month and Rs. 18,000/- in case of NET qualified candidate(s) for Research Fellows (UGC/CSIR).
  9. Selected candidate(s) for the advertised position of JRF will be paid a consolidated emolument of Rs. 12,000/- per month as fellowship. In case of NET qualified candidates (UGC/CSIR) for Research Fellows, the selected JRF will be paid consolidated emoluments of Rs. 16,000/- per month.
  10. Selected candidate(s) will be engaged initially for a period mentioned against each advertised position. Subsequently his/her tenure may be extended depending upon the exigencies of work at sole discretion of the Institute and satisfactory performance of the candidate.
  11. Candidate(s) may be allowed hostel accommodation at the institute, as per availability. Where the hostel accommodation is not possible, house rent allowance (HRA) will be paid as per the rules of the Institute. Other allowances and benefits to the research personnel would be admissible as per the rules of the Institute, amended from time to time.
  12. The selection of the candidate(s) will be based on Walk-in-Interview to be held on Friday, 6th December 2013 at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehra Dun. The registration for all advertised positions will be done from 09:00 to 10:00hrs.

  14. Candidate(s) should bring the duly filled-in applications with attested true copies of testimonials of educational qualifications, research experience, extra-curricular activities, date of birth etc., along with copies of mark sheets of all examinations.   15. One way travel expenses will be paid to the candidate, selected for the project. The expense will be limited to actual 2nd class rail/bus fare by the shortest route from his/her place of stay/residence.
