Nature-Culture Links in Asia - An Intrinsic Value System
A Case Study Compilation for IUCN World Conservation Congress 2020

Background:

The interconnectedness of nature and culture is well manifested in the World Heritage Convention. Through its mechanisms, it acknowledges the complexity of our heritage, which includes biological resources including water, landscapes, geological diversity, genes, cultural places and practices, and traditional knowledge systems.

A Case Study compilation for all World Heritage Sites (inscribed and tentatively listed) in Asia is now being proposed with the following objectives:

  • To recognize and further interpret the conceptual framework on 'multiple values' of heritage
  • To encourage heritage professionals to formulate new methods and practices that best exemplify nature-culture linkage and its relevance to protection and management.
