Dr. Karan Bharat Jain is a veterinarian by training hailing from the historic land of Salt Satyagraha—Navsari, Gujarat. He began his journey toward animal health and welfare at a young age when a chance encounter with flamingoes and Sarus cranes at a nearby lake ignited a lifelong fascination with wildlife. What started as fascination soon evolved into a deeper commitment, eventually leading him to pursue veterinary science. Blending his passion for animals with an academic interest in molecular biology, Dr. Jain completed his master’s in Animal Genetics and Breeding from the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Izatnagar where he gained extensive exposure to the use of genomic tools and genetic diversity analysis in indigenous livestock—laying a strong foundation for his interest in conservation genetics. His field experience includes active involvement in wildlife health management, disease diagnosis, and rescue operations across various zoological parks in Gujarat.
His professional development began during his visit to the Asiatic Lion and Vulture Breeding Centres at Sakkarbaug Zoo, Junagadh, where he witnessed the seamless integration of veterinary care and population genetics in species recovery programs. This experience deepened his conviction for veterinary sciences. Dr. Jain joined the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) as a Scientist in April 2025. At WII, he aims to contribute to the fields of wildlife capture, health surveillance, and the application of genetics in conservation decision-making. His interdisciplinary perspective positions him to bridge the gap between lab-based genomics and field-level conservation efforts.
Outside of his academic pursuits, Dr. Jain enjoys playing badminton, table tennis, and cycling through natural landscapes. His active engagement with the outdoors complements his scientific work and deepens his appreciation for the species he studies.
